How To Block Google SideWiki

It was pointed out to me that I didn't link to any options for blocking Google SideWiki.

From what I could find, there are two ways - If you know of a better one, let me know, I'd love to hear it.

< STRONG >Option 1: Block Google SideWiki+Toolbar completely.

Sadly this does block ANYone with Google Toolbar installed completely, but you wanna make an omelet. This is the method I'm using for the moment, but I may feel remorse and switch to Option #2.

All you have to do is add this block of text in .htaccess or in your Apache config files:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} GTB [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} GoogleToolbar [NC]
RewriteRule !^nogtb\.php$ http://hell.com [L

The result is that it will send anyone using Google Toolbar to the location you want (in this case, hell.com). You can send them to a site on your website that explains what and why you're doing it.

Option 2: Keep SideWiki comments from showing up.

This option makes each URL "unique" so that people can leave comments using Google SideWiki, but they'll be swallowed up and never show up on your site. Basically it adds a "hash" character to your URL with a random string after that. (Example: http://www.mysite.com#847587920) Web browsers ignore the hash tag and anything following it, but apparently this trips up Google SideWiki.

I may switch to this since it only affects Google Toolbar users like the above. However, if someone has javascript turned off, it won't work.

How to Install:

1. Open your HTML file.
2. Find
3. Insert this line right under :
4. You are done - yeah, it's that easy
5. Remember to insert this on every page you want to protect

Alternately, you can download the script hereand save it to your own site and then changing the "src=" to match (eg: http://www.mysite.com/swgone.js).

Anyways, there's two ways, Good luck.
